George Washington – First president of US (1732 – 1799)

George Washington who became the first president of United States of America, served two four year terms winning the re election in 1792. He is referred to as the father of the nation because of the critical role he played in the founding of the United States. As the president of United States, he aspired to create a nation that could survive in a world that was torn apart by the war between Britain and France.

His image is used on the One Dollar bill and the quarter dollar coin in an attempt to commemorate his legacy. At the Mount Rushmore Memoria,l George Washington along with other famous personalities such as Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln have been depicted in stone. Also built in his honor was one of the most well known American landmarks, The Washington Monument.

Ash Wednesday

The Christian season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday.

The date of Ash Wednesday varies each year according to the date of Easter. It is always six-and-a-half weeks before Easter. The earliest possible date of Ash Wednesday is February 4 and the latest possible date is March 10.

What is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday is a day of penitence to clean the soul before the Lent fast. Christians use ash as a symbol of being sorry for things they have done wrong and want to get rid of forever.

Why is it called Ash Wednesday?

Ashes were used in the past as a symbol of being sorry. Christians rubbed ashes on their foreheads. They wanted to show God that they were sorry for the wrong things they had done in the past year.

What happens on Ash Wednesday today?

Some Christians have a tiny smudge of ashes put on their foreheads as a sign of sorrow at not having been good over the last year.

What are the ashes made from?

In churches the priest first burns the palm crosses that have been kept from last year’s Palm Sunday and then mixes the ashes of these crosses with holy water (which has been blessed) to make a grayish paste. When people go to church on Ash Wednesday, the priest dips his thumb in the paste and uses it to make the sign of the cross on each

person’s forehead.

Why are last year’s Palm Crosses recycled?

Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, so when the crosses used in the last years Palm Sunday service are converted to ashes, worshippers are reminded that defeat and crucifixion swiftly followed triumph.

What do the ashes symbolise?

Using ashes to mark the cross on the believer’s forehead symbolizes that through Christ’s death and resurrection, all Christians can be free from sin.

This practice is common in much of Christendom, being celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and some Baptist denominations[

The Master Is Calling

The Master is calling ~ He seeks you today.
To a world lost and dying, He offers the Way.
He provides you redemption ~ He died for your sins.
He beckons you come ~ your fate lies herein.
All things of this earth will one day pass away.
The spirit ever lives, though the body decays.
Your emptiness inside only Jesus can fill.
Peace will ensue when you’re marked with His seal.
He loves you though you are still dead in your sins.
Through His plan of salvation, your new life can begin.

What waits you in Heaven, your mind can’t conceive.
But it all can be yours, if you’ll only believe.
Can’t you hear Him calling? He says, “Come to Me.
I bore the world’s sins when I hung on the tree.
When I experienced death on Black Calvary,
I defeated the grave and from death set you free.”
His hand is extended ~ reach out and take hold.
Once you’re in His grasp, you’re part of His fold.
He’ll keep you secure ~ Satan’s grip will be broken.
He loses the battle when the name “Jesus” is spoken.
Pride is the downfall of the world as a whole.
It only breeds sin and holds captive your soul.
So humble yourself and confess you’re a sinner.
God will forgive you and you’ll be a winner.
Don’t let pride keep you waiting ~ make a decision today.
The darkness you’re in will be brighter than day.
Eternity waits ~ where it’s spent is your choice.
When you choose the Master, all angels rejoice.
Acknowledge Christ Jesus as Savior and Lord.
Eternity with Him will be your reward.
Your sins are forgiven by His work at the Cross.
His blood will redeem you ~ you’ll no longer be lost.
I see you are kneeling and confessing your sins.
You’re inviting Lord Jesus to come dwell within.
You’re asking forgiveness and trusting in Him.
He’s forgiven you ~ you are no longer condemned.
You’re now a new person ~ you’ve been born again.
His righteousness covers the stain of your sin.
He’ll give you the strength to finish the race.
Like me, you’re a sinner who’s been saved by grace.
